ITALY-Project "Hate is not a sport"

The project "Hate is not a sport - Educational paths to prevent and combat racial hate speech in sport" (AID 011797) launched in 2019, aims to combat online and offline hate and discrimination while promoting social and cultural interaction. The primary objective is to prevent and combat hate, intolerance and racial discrimination among young people in the field of non-competitive sport, enhancing it as a place of aggregation and integration. The partnership involved in the project is very heterogeneous and involves both Italian NGOs and training bodies also in the sports field and associations specialized in the issue of combating hate speech (partner FormaAzione, CVCS, ADP, Celim, Cisv, Comi, Cope, ISF, Lvia, PMMlal, Csen). COPE, as a local partner in Sicily, has involved both schools (in online mode due to the Covid-19 emergency) and sports clubs and volunteers in various activities to combat hate speech on social media and in offline mode (among groups of young people). Here are some of the training activities carried out and in progress:

  • Online trainer training, aimed at teachers and sports staff: as part of the project, an educational kit has been designed by a team of experts, which will be shared during the training meetings. The training moment will aim to improve the skills of the target audience in preventing and combating the phenomenon of racial hate speech in sports and increase the ability to mobilize youth activism;
  • School-work alternation activity: Online Flash Mob, after a training moment, the kids will be asked to create, with a creative graphic design (single panels, a single banner, letters on t-shirts) the writing "Hate is not a sport". The kids, after having designed a choreography, will perform the flash mob. Other students, not directly involved, will shoot a video and take photos!
  • Online laboratory meetings, aimed at students of lower and upper secondary schools and young athletes: the experiment will use the tools designed (educational kit) and the laboratory activities will serve to increase awareness of the phenomenon and its offline and online manifestations, as well as the ability of the beneficiaries to intervene positively in the prevention and contrast of the phenomenon.
  • Young antenna network: the anti-hate teams will be present in all the areas of intervention of the project and will involve on average n. 10 young people, who, specially trained, will intercept and respond pertinently to hate speech messages in sport. Through the active involvement of young people and peer education actions, social commitment and the educational opportunities offered by digital tools will be promoted.
